Velva Underwood Obituary

Velva Mae Underwood, 98, of Gallipolis, went home to be with her Lord and Savior at 6:00 P.M. Friday, February 2, 2018 in the Holzer Senior Care Center surrounded by her loving family. Velva was a very special lady who touched many lives through mailing cards and through hours of phone conversations she had with her many friends. She served the Lord faithfully for the last 85 years after being saved and baptized at the age of 13. She was born March 31, 1919 in Cheshire, Ohio, daughter of the late Jenkin and Etta Schular Evans. She married Darius L. Underwood on December 24, 1947 in Cheshire and he preceded her in death on November 25, 2005. Velva was also preceded in death by an infant sister and a great-granddaughter, Kaylee Long, in 2014 whom she loved dearly. Velva was the oldest member of the Old Kyger Freewill Baptist Church. Surviving is her daughter, Catharine (Larry) Long, of Gallipolis, her grandchildren, Lisa (John) Kearns, Lori (Ken) Owens and Larry (Angie) Long II, great grandchildren, Derek Hogan, of Charleston, West Virginia, Cassandra (Andre) Walker, Kenzie Long, Caleb Owens, Josh Long and Luke Owens and a great-great grandson, Connor Utt, all of Gallipolis. Also surviving are countless other relatives and special friends. Friends and family may call at the Cremeens-King Funeral Home from 6 - 8 P.M. on Tuesday, February 6. Funeral services will be 1:00 P.M. Wednesday, February 7, 2018 at the funeral home. Officiating will be Rev. Leland Allman. Interment will be in the Gravel Hill Cemetery at Cheshire. Active casket bearers are Larry Long II, Derek Hogan, John Kearns, Ken Owens, Andre Walker and Tony Ireland. Honorary casket bearers are her great-grandsons,Caleb Owens, Josh Long and Luke Owens. Velva's care has been entrusted to the Cremeens-King Funeral Home, of Gallipolis.
