Guy Edison Guinther, 92, Born October 10, 1933, in Syracuse, Ohio was welcomed into God’s eternal embrace on January 25, 2026. He was the son of the late Donald and Vivian Greathouse Guinther. At the age of 4, after the 1937 flood, Guy went to live with his grandparents, William and Fannie Guinther.
He attended Syracuse grade school and has said he never missed a day of public school. At the end of the first grade, he was presented a silver dollar for attendance. Guy graduated from Pomeroy High School in 1952. While in high school, he lettered in football, basketball, and baseball. Guy played in the last Thanksgiving football game between Pomeroy and Middleport in 1948. In 1949, Guy played in the first football game at the new Pomeroy field. He threw a pass to Don Young to complete a 77-yard play that resulted in the first touchdown on that field.
After he graduated from high school, Guy enlisted in the US Navy hoping to get his brother (Trutle) of out Korea. While in the Navy, he served aboard the USS Beatty DD765. While serving his county, his deployments included France, Egypt, England, Ceylon, Arabia, and Italy. After his military service, Guy returned to Meigs County and joined the Kroger Company as a meat cutter. During this time, he met and married the love of his life Linda (Cardwell) Guinther who was from Vinton, Ohio. They were Married in 1957, and soon began a family starting with their son, G.E. Guinther, of Gallipolis, and then a daughter, Tammy (Guinther) Noonan, of Monroe, Ohio.
Over the next 60 plus years of marriage, Guy and Linda were blessed with 5 grandchildren, Guy (Brandi) Guinther II, of Gallipolis, Sara (Scott) Sandell Harrison, of Bidwell, Nicholas (Katie) Guinther, of Gallipolis, Jacob (Tori) Guinther, of Huntington, West Virginia, and Cara (Brian) Sandell Trimble, of Monroe, Ohio. Great grandchildren include Jacquelyn Harrison, Gennah Guinther, Cash Harrison, Tripp Guinther, Julia Trimble, Jessah Guinther, Griffin Guinther, Odin Guinther, Evie Guinther, Vada Trimble, Cyrus Guinther, Camile Guinther, and another Guinther baby boy on the way.
While rearing a family, guy continued to work for Kroger and refereed football and basketball games on the weekends. After several promotions and 32 years of dedicated service, he retired as a Meat Merchandiser Representative of the Roanoke Virginia Division. In 1976, he was commissioned a Kentucky Colonel in recognition of his community service. In 1977, he served as President of the Society for the Promotion of Bullfrogs (Grand Croaker), was deeded a piece of Jack Daniel’s Land, and was commissioned a Gentleman Farmer, receiving a deed to land from Bob Evans Farms. In 1978, he was named a Tennessee Squire, received the B.H. Kroger Award for Outstanding Community Service in the Mid-Atlantic Marketing Area, and was honored as an Honorary Duke of Hazard County, Kentucky, where he was also presented with a Key to the City by Mayor Bill Gorman.
Guy also served 60 plus years as a Master Mason and an active member of the Gallipolis Shrine Club for 50 years. He was also a member of the Grace United Methodist Church, and actively participated in Sunday School, prayer groups, cooking of meals, delivering meals, and the food bank.
In retirement, Guy and Linda embraced the joy of travel, sharing adventures and creating lasting memories. Among these was a deeply meaningful journey to the Middle East, where they were both baptized in the Jordan River, a moment that beautifully celebrated their faith and spiritual journey together. Guy and Linda have enjoyed the pyramids of Kyro, Egypt, as well as many cruises to the Caribbean and Alaska. Guy was an avid golfer and active participant of the Gallia County Senior Citizens of which he was awarded Senior of the year in 2004.
Guy will be deeply missed and forever cherished. Guy’s family extends heartfelt gratitude to the hospice team at Ohio’s Hospice for their compassionate care.
Masonic Funeral services will be conducted by the Pomeroy/Racine Lodge Post 164 F.&A.M. at 1:30pm, with funeral services following at 2:00 p.m. on Monday February 2, 2026, at the Cremeens-King Funeral Home, Gallipolis, with Pastor Ray Kane officiating Interment will follow the services in the Mound Hill Cemetery with military honors provided by the Gallia County Funeral Detail Team. Friends may call 11:30a.m.-1:30 p.m. on Monday.
