James Junior Proffitt

April 19, 1927 ~ February 5, 2016 (age 88) 88 Years Old

James Junior Proffitt, 88, of Portland, went Home to be with his Lord and Savior Jesus Christ at 4:50 a.m. on Friday, February 5, 2016, at his residence surrounded by his beloved wife, loving children, and cherished grandchildren. Born April 19, 1927 in the Great Bend community of Meigs County he was the son of the late James Vincent and Hazel Dow Proffitt. He served his country from 1945-1966 and retired from the United States Navy , He also served his county as the  Meigs County Sherriff from 1977-1984, and also a the superintendent of the Meigs County garage of  the Ohio Department of Transportation (ODOT).  He was a member of the Family Worship Center, Baton Rouge, LA, a member of the Drew Webster Post # 39 of the American Legion at Pomeroy, and also a member of the Pomeroy Carpenters Local #650. He was an avid golfer, gardener and loved hunting and cooking and being outdoors. He also loved to travel, boating, bluegrass music, and spending time with his family.

He is survived by his wife of 23 years, Sharryl Spencer Franko Proffitt, whom he married on June 2, 1993 in Conway, South Carolina, sons, Monty (Alice) Proffitt, of Portland, Terry (Brenda) Proffitt, of Racine, a daughter, Patricia Proffitt, of Chicago, Illinois, a step-son, Nathan (Michele) Franko, of Randleman, North Carolina, a step-daughter, Ammie Renee’ (John) Fannin, of Reidsville, N.C., grandchildren, Tammi (Mark) King, Jamie (Jennifer Johnson) Proffitt, Chris Proffitt, James (Malyun) Cerbes, Jesse (Crystal Miller) Cerbes, Great-grandchildren, Victoria King, Jaden Proffitt, Jillian Proffitt, Aman Cerbes, Layla Cerbes, Rayyan Cerbes, Jesse Cerbes Jr., Andrea Cerbes and Farrah Cerbes. step-grandchildren, Natalie Michele Franko and Sharryl Renee’ Fannin,  two brothers , Raymond E. “Mac” Proffitt, of Racine, and Dale R. “Rob” (Letha) Proffitt, of Portland, and several nieces and nephews also survive.

In addition to his parents he is preceded in death by a granddaughter, Stacy Proffitt, and a sister-in-law, Mary Lou Evans Proffitt.

Funeral services will be held at 10:00 a.m.  Tuesday, February 9, 2016 in the Cremeens Funeral Home, Racine. Pastor Tom Wilson and Col. Sherman Cundiff will officiate. Interment, with full military honors from the United States Navy and Drew Webster Post # 39 of the American Legion, will follow in the Great Bend Cemetery. Friends may call from 6-8 p.m. on Monday at the funeral home. The Meigs County Sheriff’s Department Honor Guard will stand guard over Sheriff Proffitt’s casket at the funeral home.
